The future of Riordan Mansion is in your hands
Since state funding for the park was eliminated in May of 2010, the park has been entirely self-supporting through fees for guided tours and special events, donations from private individuals, fund-raising efforts, in-kind services from the City of Flagstaff, and a grant from the Flagstaff Community Foundation.
Operating expenses have been cut dramatically in the past year. The park formerly employed four full time and two part time park rangers. Today there is no full time staff. There are just three part time rangers and a corps of 25 volunteers to give tours, perform daily upkeep and long term maintenance, and develop special programs for students and the community. The Arizona Historical Society provides general oversight and guidance as needed.
RAN has raised over $57,000 in 12 months, but has used more than 50% of that amount to expand and upgrade gift shop inventory and defray personnel and utility costs in the slow tourism season from November through March.
Our needs for routine and emergency maintenance continue to mount as the mansion ages. The funds from RAN cannot support both operating and maintenance costs. The critical need is for several large grants or donations to establish both a capital reserve for maintenance, restoration and repair, and an endowment fund. With these two vital components in place, it is quite possible that Riordan Mansion State Historic Park can remain open to the public for many years to come.
